1. Who Are We?
My name is Mark Abbott, and along with my mom Susan Abbott, we have created a little foundation to honor the memory of my dad, Charles Abbott. He passed away in 1999 and we honor two of his passions, golf and volunteer tutoring with this golf tournament.
2. What is the name of the Foundation?
The foundation is the Charles Abbott Memorial Foundation. For obvious reasons, we named the found after my dad to continue his legacy.
3. What do you support?
We support two other charities. The first is one of the fastest growing non-profits in the states, THINK Together (www.thinktogether.org). They work with schools to provide after school programs in the greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas. They will soon be providing programs in Northern California as well. The second beneficiary is the Boys and Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor (www.bgclaharbor.org). They took it upon themselves to create a College Bound program which is now being brought to all of the Boys and Girls Club throughout the U.S..
4. Why do you support these charities?
My dad used to love to tutor kids in math and dreamed about becoming a teacher in his retirement years. He never made it to retirement, but with his Rotary Club, would volunteer at one of the three L.A. Harbor B&G Club sites providing after-school tutoring to students. Upon his passing it was an easy decision to continue his legacy by supporting charities who make a difference in kids lives through after-school programs. Being that tutoring was one of my dad’s favorite things to do during the week, we decided to honor his memory by supporting THINK Together and the Boys and Girls who have stellar after-school programs.
5. How much money has been raised?
Since 2000, we have raised almost $200,000. Last year was an enormous year for our foundation and we were able to give $25,000 to THINK Together and $25,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of the Los Angeles Harbor.
6. Who is on the Foundation board?
The current board members include: Mark Abbott, Susan Abbott and John Whitman who is a long-time family friend.
7. Is any money paid to the Board?
No. None. All proceeds go directly to the beneficiaries and all work is done for free… just like this web site. We pride ourselves on this as your donation gets maximum use by going directly to the beneficiaries.
More to come…
